Event Details

Find out what it takes to become an Acumen Fund investee through a real-life case study.

Join the Young Social Entrepreneurs of Canada and the Acumen Fund Toronto Chapter as we sit in the investor's chair.

At this event, we'll explore why the non-profit social venture firm, Acumen Fund, invested in Ecotact, a social enterprise in Kenya providing environmentally-responsible sanitation.

The context

In Kenya, it has been more than 30 years since the government last invested in public sanitation facilities in Nairobi, home to some of the largest and most densely populated informal settlements in the world. As a result, many residents use plastic bags, or “flying toilets,” to dispose of excrement at night, which are commonly thrown from residences into the street. The resulting elevated exposure to waterborne diseases poses a major threat to public and environmental health. Diarrheal disease alone is a top cause of death in Kenyan children under age 5.

The case study

This case study tells the story of David Kuria, an entrepreneur with a vision to define a new standard of hygiene in target communities, reducing urban pollution from human waste, generating employment opportunities for low-income individuals, and restoring dignity to the provision of sanitation services among urban poor.

The event

Come learn about David Kuria's innovation, his pitch to Acumen Fund, and the due diligence process that took place that ultimately determined - to invest or not to invest?

This event will help you understand what social investors are looking for and the considerations they make when deciding which social enterprises to invest in.

Limited spots available. Please RSVP in advance.
$10 @ the door.
Light refreshments provided.
